Samsung Vitality Review : Budget Music Phone with Android Gingerbread

Samsung Vitality, tagged with model number SCH-r700, is a phone that accommodate Cricket’s Muve Music service. It was announced for the first time on January this year and allow customers to grab all musics, ringtones, ringback tones, and all other music related contents, directly from their Cricket handset. This service is also packed with the carrier’s regular plan, which include talks, text, and Internet.
Samsung Vitality is the second Muve Music phone from Cricket. It is currently run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Although it is dubbed as the second Muve Music, Samsung Vitality is actually the first device that “really” support for the service. That’s because the title was previously granted to Samsung Suede, but for some good reason, the launching of this phone was delayed, which give Samsung Vitality a way to emerge. Being a Muve Music phone means that Samsung Vitality also posses a dedicated Muve Music button on the left hand side of it’s chassis.
Overall, Samsung Vitality looks quite similar to Samsung Admire from MetroPCS. It is not surprisng since this handset is the rebranded version of the MetroPCS’ device! As we mentioned earlier, the difference lies on the dedicated Muve Music button, which will give you an instant access to the service. Talked about dimension, this phone is currently measured at 4.6 inch tall, 2.4 inch wide and 0.5 inch thick. It is quite small, even for today’s standard, so this handset wouldn’t find any problem to fit into your small jeans or coat pocket. Samsung Vitality is currently weighs at 4.14 only, so it will be easy to carry on anywhere you wanted. But soon we notice that it is coated with a plastic-made chassis, so you must hold it carefully folks.

In term of display, Samsung Vitality carry on 3.5 inch screen with HVGA resolution. It is currently manage to provide us with decent colors quality. Graphical features displayed in detailed view. There’s up to 5 different home screen, which can be decorated with any widget you deserved. It is possible to place the Google search bar on the home screen. Unfortunately, there’s no option to put quick access to turn on/off WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity on the home screen. Since it run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, you can utilize some useful upgrades that Google offered for this device.
Samsung Vitality use swype keyboard to use the handle the touch keyboard feature. If you’re already get used to phone/device with larger screen, you’ll find it difficult to use the keyboard on Samsung Vitality. There’s only four rows, each keys are separated with small space. Off course you can instantly switch to numerical keypad. On the other hand, there’s nothing much to tell about it’s dialpad.
Right beneath the display, you’ll be able to find four capacitive buttons that control Android’s main function like home, back, search, and menu. Volume buttons and microSD card slot are currently take place on the left hand side. On the opposite side, you can find the power control and Muve Music dedicated button. Right on the bottom part of the handset, lies microUSB port for charging purpose. 3.5mm audio jack is currently sit on the top side of the handset. Turn the phone and you’ll be able to find the 3.2 megapixels rear shutter.
Aside from the Muve Music service, this handset also has additional features like Bluetooth, WiFi, email, text, GPS, and Google standard apps like Map, Gmail, and Navigator.
Now, it’s time for us talk about Samsung Vitality’s 3.2 megapixels camera. It is able to capture image with standard 64 x 480 pixels resolution. You can choose between three different picture quality. Not to mention that it also has useful camera features like focus mode, scene, spot metering, white balance, color setting, geolocation, and 4x zoom. There’s no restriction for how long you can record a video. Just as long as you have enough free space, the camera will continue to record it.
Samsung Vitality is powered by a standard 800MHz processors. It might not as fast as the next generation dual-core CPU, but sufficient enough to provide us with stablest yet decent system performance. The phone quality might not the best we’ve ever experience and we are also notice some delay when we try to switch between the regular Android Gingerbread interface and Muve Music. Depends on your current signal strength, you can download your favorite tunes from Muve Music real fast.
According to Samsung’s data, the vitality should be able to provide 6.5 hours of talktime and 10.4 days of standby time. We have no chance to run a proper battery test, but we believe that it will bring performance similar to it’s non Muve Music sibling, the Samsung Admire. The MetroPCS representative only manage to survive for up to 3 hours and last for 8.3 days on standby time.
Overall, Samsung Vitality is a great alternative if you’re currently look for budget Android music phone. It is priced at $200 only and the monthly Music Muve plan will only cost you $35. The great thing is that there will be no string attached. You are free to end your service anytime you want and use Samsung Vitality as a regular phone!
