This Is What People Are Googling When It Comes to STDs

xually transmitted diseases are no joke: According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur every year in the U.S. With numbers like that, it's no wonder men and women turn to Google for information on everything from how exactly you catch chlamydia to whether toilet seats harbor STDs like herpes.
Recently, an online company called Superdrug Online Doctor culled data from search queries via SEMrush and Google Trends to identify which are the most commonly searched STDs, and what questions curious minds are asking. Here's a glimpse at what they found.

Herpes is the most-searched STD in the U.S., followed closely by chlamydia and HPV. The least-searched STD in the past 12 months? HIV and AIDS.
More STD searches come from Mississippi than any other state. Louisiana is the runner-up. However, when it comes to HIV- and AIDS-specific queries, Washington, D.C., leads the nation.
People still wonder if you can get an STD from oral sex. More than 3,500 people in the U.S. and the United Kingdom searched the phrase "can you get an STD from oral sex?" in February.
They also worry about toilets transferring herpes. Approximately 2,400 U.S. and U.K. residents googled "can you get herpes from a toilet seat?" during that same time period.
There's plenty more where that came from. You can read all of the findings here.
Do any of these findings surprise you? Do you still have questions when it comes to STDs? And if so, would you turn to your doctor or to Google for the answers?
